DEAR WORKHORSE FAMILY –

It is with a heavy heart that I write this announcement. Due to COVID and the continued impact of the pandemic, Workhorse Athletics will be closing its doors indefinitely, effective February 1, 2022.

The impact of the pandemic has continued to be very real across 2021. While this decision may come as a shock to some of you, it has been something that Christina and I have been working to avoid since May 2020.

Having to close the doors of Workhorse Athletics is heartbreaking.  We have poured blood, sweat and many tears into the community and business over the past 6 years.  I will only look back and know that this end result does not come from a lack of effort. However, our efforts and energy have proven to not be enough – this season is ending. Despite all the mixed emotions, one thing is certain – I feel unbelievably grateful to have been surrounded by an amazing community of people for all these years!

So with that, I want to say thank you.

To the McKenzie family – Alicia, George and Rae – thank you for this once in a lifetime opportunity.  Thank you for welcoming me (and Christina) into the Crossfit West Springfield community in 2014.  Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be your General Manager, to learn from you and understand what it takes to run a gym and business, and most important – for the opportunity to take on full ownership of a business that originated with your family.

To Will – my General Manager.  Thank you for being at the forefront of it all.  Thank you for always stepping up, for stepping in, for taking on additional work, and for providing me with your honest feedback.  Thank you for having my back, for being a great team player and leader, and for ALWAYS showing up with such a positive attitude.  It has been amazing to watch you develop over the years professionally as a coach and trainer.  I am so thankful to have you as my #2 and I’m going to miss working with you every day.

To the coaching staff of the past, and the current team of coaches who have been with me this past arduous year — Will, Jess, Jay, Cece, and Ethan — THANK YOU. You are the heart of Workhorse Athletics.  Each of you have invested hours of your free time to be a part of this community. You have been amazing leaders inside the gym and ambassadors outside the gym.  The effort you all put in this past year has been nothing short of amazing. Thank you for entrusting me as your leader. I am so grateful for you all, and the opportunity to stand beside you on the coaching floor.

To the Ops team – Nick, Morgan and Anna – Thank you for being absolute rock stars, and BEYOND helpful to the business on the backend.

Nick – thank you for crushing our social media content and helping us stay true to our Workhorse brand.  Thank you for investing (so much of) your personal time and energy into bringing our Workhorse Athletics brand identity to life. Your professional expertise has captured the brand beautifully through all of our projects throughout the years.

Anna and Morgan – thank you for the last two and a half months. Before you joined our Operations team, I was at my lowest (mentally and emotionally) trying to figure out how we were going to expand the business, get our content out there and come out of the hole that COVID put us in. You both gave me hope and relit a fire in my belly to continue moving forward. The last couple of months would never have been possible without your help.  It truly is heartbreaking to know how much potential we have together, and not be able to execute any longer.

To my wife, Christina – What a journey it’s been! I still remember sitting in the condo back in the fall of 2015 and jokingly saying – “Hey, what if we owned a gym?”. I still can’t believe you said “you’re crazy but, ok.” Patient, supportive, and loving don’t even begin to cover it. You have been my rock from day one. No matter the obstacles or how low things have gone over the years, your love has been the pillar to keep me standing. This last year and a half has been no different. Your unwavering support has been my lifeline. We have laughed together, and have cried together. Thank you for your trust. Thank you for your love!   We have made so many memories and lifelong friends at Crossfit West Springfield, I know this is heartbreaking for you too.

And last but certainly not least, THANK YOU WORKHORSE FAMILY. To those of you who have shown up and continue to show up – words cannot describe my gratitude and appreciation I have for you. Thank you for your commitment not only to Workhorse Athletics, but to yourself. Your commitment to becoming 1% better every day, and trusting the process. Thank you for enduring these hardest months together. And most importantly, thank you for making Workhorse Athletics your home.

Thank you all for this amazing opportunity and this amazing journey.  I know our paths will cross again soon.

In health,

Ryan
